4-H COUNCIL MINUTES
for March 14th, 2009

Meeting called to order by Melba Riel at 12:25pm.

Those in attendance: Melba Riel, Anita Raddatz, Corinne Olsen, Cheryl Bartholomew, Karen Poe, Cheryl Spencer

Recited pledge of allegiance and 4-H pledge.

Minutes of Feb.14th council meeting approved unanimously with Motion1-Corinne and Motion 2-Karen

1. Financial Report- Anita showed us the current financial balances.

2. ExecutiveTeam minutes: Copies passed out to those in attendance and used as the agenda.

3. Website update: Anita & Debbie Lambson are checking on how to put more photos and videos on the website. They have to stick to the USU extension template. They are checking on the availability of a template to do this. Also, Matt’s agriculture site has not been used but will be in the future. They will probably go to using more blogs.

4. Service: Cheryl Spencer told the council that the National Federation for the Blind is always in need of people to read textbooks and other books onto tapes. This may be a service that the ambassadors or YLT groups could do. Karen Poe will look into it on the internet. Cheryl also suggested that the YLT could maybe help read to kids during story hour at libraries or possibly during National Literacy month for a service project. 4-H information (contests, workshops, etc.) could be placed on a bookmark that is given to the kids at the story hour.

5. Promotion: Anita is going to concentrate on marketing. Ideas discussed: a weekly small ad in newspapers with clover and website address, making a power point, booth at Back to School nights, starting a “Friends of 4-H” organization, assemblies in schools, visiting classrooms, bookmarks to be put in libraries, Anita on radio table talk every 3rd wed., weekly column in pyramid, radio ads, city council meetings, etc.

6. Workshops:
a. April- cancelled
May- Entomology (Darrel Olsen family)
June- Plant science –Karen will do a class on corn.
Anita will ask Matt to oversee workshop. Could use JMG book.
Names suggested to help: Allan Stevens, Tom Shore
July- Heritage –Karen will do a class on animal hides.
Melba will do a class on Utah travel with a map.
Other ideas: family tree, scrapbook, “About Me” book, US History
Cheryl Bartholomew will oversee this workshop.
August- Prepare for Fair (Strut Your Stuff) by Melba
Ideas: Sticky beads on bracelets, paper crafts (Spencers), watercolor, drawing (Sandi Schoppe), soap, quilling,
needlepoint (Melba)



Sept.- Marine biology –Karen will do a class on sea turtles.
Other ideas: Crepe paper hanging in doorway like kelp and have kids make a sea scene, sea otters pamphlet, sea life trivia video game, porthole made out of paper plates.
Oct.- Perform & Record Visual Arts
Nov.- Holiday Crafts
Ideas: Cake decorating for birthday, etc.

b. Anita will put these in her enews and ask for volunteers to help with workshops or classes.
Cheryl will contact Elizabeth Hveem about possibly helping with a 4-H class or workshop.

7. Expansion & Review Team report- Noboby showed up for the last meeting but many responded in writing. See attached.

8. Nominations & Elections Team report- No response yet for nominations. Will keep trying.

9. YLT/Ambassadors Report- Worked on ribbon bookmarks to be given to Ephraim Elementary for special reading program. Steven Olsen was in charge. Region Teen Retreat is from April 9-10th. Must register by March 16th.

10. GPS- Went to Spring City to map out fire hydrants. Will meet again on April 4th at 9am at 4-H office.

11. Ambassadors: Revised scorecard and addendum presented by Anita. Applications due April 1st and new ambassadors installed on May 1st.

12. Above and Beyond Pin Award Applications: Anita presented revisions made to application and was approved unanimously with Motion 1-Karen and Motion 2-Melba. (see website for approved pin application)

13. Birding club: Melba wanted to buy some Birds of Utah pamphlets ($3.50 each) for her club out of the 4-H Council fund. Children attending her club will each buy one so the money will eventually come back into the fund. Approved unanimously with Motion 1-Corinne and Motion 2-Karen.

14. Selection committee for scholarship & ambassador selection: Melba, Anita, Debbie, maybe Matt Palmer or Mark Oakley will meet on April 16th, Thursday, at 9:30am to look over the scholarship & ambassador applications and pick winners. Next Exec. Team meeting same day @10:30am.

15. New business for next meeting:
a. Inventory list of backroom-Cheryl will have this ready for next meeting.
b. Approve money for May workshop
c. Installation of new ambassadors
d. Expansion & Review letter (Anita)
e. Contests

Voted unanimously to adjourn at 2:15 pm (Motion1- Karen, Motion 2-Corinne)
