Sanpete 4-H Council Minutes of September 12, 2009, meeting held in Room 119 on the west campus of Snow College.
Attendees: Melba Riel, Karen Poe, Anita Raddatz, Cheryl Bartholomew, Alexia Poe, & Ron Poe.
Melba called the meeting to order at 12:13.
Financial report submitted by Debbie Lambson, Treasurer, via Anita.
Appointments to officers recognized: Melba Riel, President; Karen Poe, President Elect, and Corinne Olsen, Secretary.
YLT/Ambassadors: Cheryl reported that high school teens can attend Teen Leadership Training (TLT) and select which TRY (Teens Reaching Youth) team they would like to participate in. A minimum of 3 teens have expressed interest; deadline for applications for TRY and registrations for TLT are due on Tues, Sept 15. One adult coach per TRY team is needed. TRY Teams will return to provide their commitment of sharing their information with at least 15 youth for 6 hours, through our 4-H Second Saturday workshops. Melba mentioned she had received the training for the TRY Lotion & Potions and she could help if needed. Anita will be required to submit a report within 2 weeks of the conclusion of TRY Teams. With the $100 scholarship for all attendees at TLT in Logan + $25 scholarship for SW Region Ambassadors, participants will be required to fulfill their obligations to remain in the Sanpete County 4-h program. There are also 3 other sites where the TRY training is occurring, free of charge, for those youth who prefer to go to Beaver, Ogden, or Price. Each TRY teams consists of 2-4 teens and 1 adult coach – all members of the teams must attend a TRY training.
Expansion & Review: Anita will be sending the survey to all families, in October, asking about their 4-H experience during the 08/09 4-H Year.
County Clubs: Birding 4-H Club is on hiatus until next spring; they had 2 displays in the fair that went on to State 4-H Fair. Rabbit 4-H Club: Matt will be the agent for all animals, large & small. Scrapbook 4-H Club will try to have schedule by Oct 1, online. GPS: Chad will continue mapping Spring City hydrants with 4-H’ers. Calan’s Crafty Crafters 4-H Club is on hiatus until summer. Gunnison Needlework 4-H Club ends Sept. Melba’s Hook & Needle 4-H club had 1 fair entry that went to 4-H State Fair; they will continue to meet.
Marketing/Promotion: Anita has received a new indoor sign for Sanpete Co Extension that will be hung on the back wall and will be visible from the front door. Anita will be meeting with Snow’s physical plant people to get the sign hung and a wall moved in the cubicles that will move Debbie’s office so she can be the receptionist at the new “front” entrance. Then Cheryl will move into Debbie’s current office and have more space.
Shirlyn Jones was the adult who taught modeling for the Sanpete County Fair; Shirlyn may be joining 4-H and attend Council meetings.
The 4-H website is still being worked on by Debbie and Anita – creating blogs for existing pages.
Sanpete County Fair: Melba stated that her husband was very impressed with 4-H space; particularly the special needs club and the Fun on the Farm new exhibit; he thinks 4-H is very important for kids; very impressed with quality of exhibits. 4-H parent Mrs. Fullmer told Anita her sons enjoyed the birding project; their displays went to State 4-H fair. The Fullmers organize the Fly-In at Mt. Pleasant airport and have invited 4-H to be part of the event next year. For the fair this year, there were several new families with exhibits and the quality of the exhibits was really exceptional, according to Anita.
Sanpete County 4-H schedule for 2009-10 4-H year was presented by Anita. The Sanpete Messenger is planning an insert in October.
YLT needs 2 hours to complete their work; request was made to expand YLT time to 11-1 . This expansion would require that the Council move to 1:00 pm Approved.
YLT’s Braille books service project was discussed in YLT meeting earlier this morning. The Braille books assignments have been given. YLT would like to perform for people in residential facilities; assignments were accepted and final decisions will be made at October YLT meeting.
The National 4-H slogan for 09-10 4-H year is “Meet the Future” but there is no logo. After discussion the decision was made to use 4-H for the Future. Anita made the motion; Karen 2nd. Approved.
Responses from today’s workshops were very positive. 30kids attended.
Anita said the staff would organize the appreciation event.
Voted to approve amount to spend for October workshops, Perform & Record; cheryl made a motion to allow $100; Karen seconded; approved.
In addition to the new $1 for 4-H’ers with a card and $3 for non-members, starting October 1, 2009, if kids have no 4-H card the fee will be $3. Reminder that kids under the age of 5 cannot be present at 4-H 2nd Saturdays – insurance requirement.
If the ad appears in the Pyramid, or other media, about 4-H without Anita’s permission, Anita will contact any media using the clover or 4-H name without permission; permission for the county lies with Anita, unless state 4-H approved.
